Going to the Barber after a Hair Transplant

If you’ve only begun to consider having a hair transplant, then you probably have a lot of questions. Despite the fact that over 100,000 people receive hair transplants every year in the United States, we don’t really talk about the procedure. Most people don’t even know that the procedure allows you to naturally grow your own hair. You will need to let your scalp heal, and it will take time to get that luscious head of hair you always wanted, but it’s completely natural. Once the healing period is over, you can cut and style it any way you want. However, you will have to be a bit patient initially. Going to the barber after a hair transplant should happen only after you have healed.

The Procedure Itself

Scientific advances have greatly improved the hair transplant process over the years. NeoGraft surgery Houston, a form of follicular unit extraction (FUE), doesn’t even require an incision. This means that there is no chance of visible scarring, and your recovery period is substantially reduced. It works by taking single follicles from the back of your head and replacing them on the balding area. They will continue to naturally grow hair in their new location without the back of your head looking any different. Still, you will want to treat your scalp gently for a while.

Although Neograft is a non-surgical procedure, your hair loss specialist Houston Dr. Linville will still send you home with care instructions. Follow them religiously. These instructions will ensure that your scalp heals quickly. Even with perfect attention to detail and a gentle touch, you may still have some scabbing up to two weeks after the procedure. You want them to fall away naturally, so avoid scratching or using a comb too close to the scalp. Based on the number and placement of your transplants, Dr. Linville will advise you on how to best care for your scalp after the procedure.

When to go in for a Cut

Three to four weeks after your hair transplant, you will have another follow-up with your doctor. Dr. Linville will be looking to see how well you are healing and to make sure your hair is growing as it should be. This is a great time to ask if you are ready for your first post-transplant haircut. If your doctor agrees that you’re ready, then you’re golden. Go ahead and make your appointment. If not, then you should wait at least another week and hold off on getting your hair trimmed until your doctor gives their approval.

At the Barbershop, you may choose to tell the barber that you recently had implants if your scalp is still a bit sensitive. Other than that, it is just like cutting any other head of hair, except some of the hair will be significantly shorter than the rest. There are two ways you can deal with this: cut it very short to bring all of your hair down to the level of the new growth, or opt for a volumizing style that purposefully conceals new hair.

Finding the Right Look for You

If you want a volumizing style, then try talking to your barber ahead of time. Ask them what they recommend to cover the new growth and make sure you have the necessary products on hand. A decent hair mousse is a great start, but your barber will be able to show you what products and tools are needed to style your specific cut. Speaking openly with your barber and taking advantage of their experience is a great way to make sure you get the best cut and style to cover up your new growth until it’s long enough to be fully incorporated. Going to the barber after a hair transplant should be an empowering experience. So have fun with it!
